Can I use 1 TB external hard drive USB connection for laptop / notebook or just 320?

Is it wise to use 1 TB of connection External USB hard disk with Windows laptop / notebook? Or larger can be used is 320 GB? If so which brand is best, Seagate or Western? Or is there a larger size that can be used?

I am currently using the Seagate FreeAgent Pro 1TB with my laptop. Works fine and has a pregnant very nice. I can not say which brand is best, but Seagate offers 5 year warranty, so I'm sold with Seagate. If there is something you should consider When buying an external drive: heat, noise and connectivity. I bought the Pro version of FreeAgent line because it has interface e-SATA, which is likely to become standard for laptops (though my laptop does not ) Correction of the answer above mine: the ability external hard drives has nothing to do with their portability. An example is form factor. with 3.5 "external hard drive, you'll probably need a feeding and it is more difficult to transport. 2.5 "drives (those used for laptop) does not require much power, they need only one USB cable to work
