I'll buy a small used car and I'm throwing between fact little, what are people's opinions?

My requirements are basically a small car, the more energy efficient as possible, but at the same time not too low power compared to its size. I know these 2 goals clash. I do not to race or drive my car very difficult, but I'll just roll a bit if I want something thats a drive from Nice. I look at a few different options, but my top 3 at the moment are the Honda Civic, VW Polo and the Daihatsu Sirion. What are your opinions and suggestions?

Nissan Sentra are great. I have a 1995 200SX which is still going strong and gets 40 mpg highway. I'm not sure what I get from the city. I heard nothing but good things about the Honda Civic, but have no direct experience with it.
