Why is water in the tropical areas apparently lighter (eg turquoise) in the northern areas?
The tropical seas are usually a lighter blue because they are lighter than water at higher latitudes. Do you know why? It is because of dead animals and plants in flowing water. This may seem obvious, but it means that any nutrients in seawater are rapidly used by animals and plants when these organisms die, they sink to the bottom taking the nutrients with them. The only way these nutrients may be lost replaced if form water on the ocean floor, where all the dead bodies go, may be moved toward the surface. that cycling can not happen in the tropics, because the water surface water is hot and warm water floats on cold ocean floor. Accordingly tropical waters very quickly become poor in nutrients. Because they are very poor in nutrients actually saw little in tropical waters. Very little algae, very little plankton and so on. And because nothing lives in more tropical waters they remain clear. This means that light can get will waayyy in the depths, and the light passes through water to obtain the blue wavelengths scattered. It produces a bright turquoise blue ocean. However the cold waters are dirty and full of life due to the upwelling of the ocean floor. All that dirt and all the life it supports absorbs sunlight very quickly. The light only penetrate a few meters in the cold waters. With very little light penetration has not much chance to disperse. Which produces an ocean that is very dark, and when the blue wavelengths are attenuated by the red greens to produce a blue-gray mud. So that all means that tropical waters are clear and are clear because they are sterile and poor nutrients. Coral reefs grow in tropical waters, precisely because they are clear and sterile and allows enough sunlight for photosynthesis of symbiotic algae that live within the coral and provide most of their food.
